About GPRII
Vision and Mission
Our Vision
The Word of God for the People of God in Indonesia.
Our Mission
We exist to glorify God by making mature disciples of Jesus Christ who share the Gospel with others as they love God and love their neighbors.
Goal
GPRII is a church planting movement that seeks to provide well prepared, heart motivated, and Spirit empowered pastors and other church ministry workers who are equipped to lead churches that minister to their communities through the ordinary means of grace, and also cooperate synergistically with YPPH schools and Siloam hospitals and clinics for gospel-centered, holistic impact on their communities.
Purpose
To glorify God as each congregation grows in numbers and Christian maturity through the meaningful participation of each member and each family in worship, word (Christian education), welcome (fellowship), and witness.
That each member, each family, and each congregation as a whole glorify God through regular, knowledgeable, and heartfelt prayer and praise and through the dedicated use of time, treasure, and talent.
That each member, each family, and each congregation as a whole glorify God through the consistent, diligent study of His Word (the Bible) and through loving, practical obedience to His Word in our daily lives.
That each member, each family, and each congregation as a whole glorify God through loving, caring relationships with others in the family of God.
That each member, each family, and each congregation as a whole glorify God by bringing others to faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior (and thus into the family of God with us) and by bringing our community, nation, and the world under the Lordship of Christ, through what we say and how we live.
Beliefs
We are a church that is winsomely Reformed in its doctrine and understanding of the sacraments and presbyterian in its church government.
GPRII holds firmly to the biblical doctrines taught in scripture and summarized in historic creeds and confessions like the Westminster Confession of Faith (Westminster Standards). We use the word “winsomely” because we want to loving and graciously help other people see the truth as it is taught in scripture.
History
In 2013, Dr. Ric Cannada and Dr. Niel Nielson, advisors to YPPH (Light and Hope Educational Foundation) were encouraged by Dr. James Riady, Patron of YPPH, to consider starting a church planting movement that would focus especially on providing Reformed churches for the graduates of UPH (Universitas Pelita Harapan) serving in YPPH schools and in Siloam Hospitals.
Dr. Ric Cannada was approved as an official “Evangelist” to Indonesia from the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA – pcaac.org) to establish a new church synod which would reflect a winsome Reformed theology.
The Presbyterian Reformed Evangelical Church of Indonesia (GPRII) was established based on:
- The Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms (WCOF) doctrinally
- The PCA type of church governance (polity) using the PCA Book of Church Order (BCO) with some revisions
Dr. Ric Cannada, Dr. Niel Nielson, and Rev. Andrew Matthews were announced as a temporary session (board of elders) to model a plurality of leadership from the beginning of GPRII. Rev. Matthews was replaced by Rev. Mitchell Moore during the first year of GPRII when Rev. Matthews moved from Indonesia to Australia and Rev. Moore moved to Indonesia from the US. Later, Dr. Ron Scates served as an interim pastor for 6 months.
Initially there were two worship services on Sunday mornings meeting on the campus of UPH:
- One service was in English for the English-speaking community which eventually became Karawaci Presbyterian Church
- One service used translation from English into Bahasa Indonesian primarily for the UPH students and staff
Always the goal has been to establish churches in a combination holistic ministry with YPPH schools and Siloam hospitals. Currently GPRII includes the following churches:
- Karawaci Presbyterian Church (KPC), Karawaci Lippo Village, Banten
- Christ Chapel Karawaci (CCK), Karawaci Lippo Village, Banten
- Christ Chapel Manado (CCM), Sulawesi Utara
- Christ Chapel Palembang (CCP), Sumatera Selatan
- Christ Chapel Kupang (CCKu), Nusa Tenggara Timur
- Christ Chapel Bogor & Sentul (CCBS), Jawa Barat
- Christ Chapel Sentani (CCS), Jayapura (in process)
This movement is the ultimate church planting opportunity!
The main focus, or point of the spear, for GPRII is to work with the UPH graduates (who have worshipped at CCK and KPC while they have studied at UPH) to become the core groups and provide leadership for starting GPRII churches and chapels, in order to impact and influence Christianity in general throughout Indonesia through a holistic ministry of church, school, and hospital that is all winsomely Reformed.
